 INSPIRATIONS

I was inspired by the global movement to address global warming, and wrote "Blue Planet" in October of 2010.  This music video can also be  seen on YouTube.  It occurred to me while writing this (during a cold winter's day), all that I have missed that I didn't see in my busy daily life.....Moving to a beautiful rural area by the ocean provides me with daily entertainment whenever I look out the windows!

                                                                                                                                                                                                    KDK, 2010

"I wrote 'The Crossing~Sea Spirit' inspired initially by a 16-year old teenager, Jason, who shot himself in Cambria, after hinting to his friends that he was going to commit suicide.  I didn't know Jason, but his photo in the newspaper haunted me for many days.  I walked along Moonstone Beach and it was very foggy.....The melody and title came to me as I thought about this tragedy.

Where had we all failed him?.........."

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     KDK, 2007

"I wrote 'California Anthem' after experiencing a brain hemorrhage....I had a young baby at home, and suddenly life took on a new meaning.  I was struck by the fleeting nature of our existence, and by how much I had taken all in this life for granted...."

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        KDK, 2005

"I wrote 'Home Is Where The Heart Is' inspired by Olivia, a 16-year old who was forced to move into an old run-down motel with her 3 other family members, after they became homeless just before Christmas, 2009.  Despite the situation, Olivia maintains a 4.0 GPA and is active volunteering to serve youth and the community......What a wonderful inspiration to us all!"

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        KDK, 2010

"I wrote 'The Ascension' inspired by the death of my beloved Mom, 'Vickie,' who passed away in 2006.  (She was Norwegian, and as a child she lived in Bergen, Norway, the homeplace of my maternal ancestors.)  In 2008, I had just gotten a new synthesizer and had sat down to 'try it out' --(like we used to try out our new skates or skis while growing up!)  The music flooded over me, as I celebrated the joy of this new instrument, and I really wasn't 'playing' it at all--and it became the basis for this new piece of music, which has been used by other friends who also found it comforting. 'The Ascension'  has been played during a wake for a  husband of a friend who passed in 2009. I hope others can find comfort as well from 'The Ascension......' "

                                                                                                                                                                                                     KDK, 2009

"I started Project H.O.P.E. (Health, Options, Prevention, Education) after seeing a young boy (Eric) in my son's 4th Grade class, who was being tormented for months because he was 'different.'

Although he was very bright, he became very depressed, and my son told me daily stories of how Eric would be under his desk crying, "Please stop!" while his classmates tormented and taunted him.  At lunch Eric would walk the perimeter of the schoolyard alone while his classmates played. I began to wonder...... 'what on earth are we teaching our kids?'

Project H.O.P.E.'s success gave me the strength and determination to start the non-profit called 'HealthWorks! TV' which served the Counties of San Luis Obispo, and Santa Clara, CA, for many years."

                                                                                                                                                                                                     KDK, 2010

"I started 'HealthWorks! TV' after learning that Jason, a teenager in Cambria, had hinted to his friends that he was suicidal, but they had not reported it, fearing that they would be 'betraying his confidence.'

'HealthWorks! TV' debuted initially a few days after 911,  was a live show that helped the community find answers to questions related to the terror attacks, express their fears, and promote healing among the residents of San Luis Obispo County.  The first real show was on 'Suicide Prevention.' "

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        KDK, 2002

"Thanks to the following people who helped so much to make 'HealthWorks! TV' a reality:  Dr. Trudy Moss, Dr. Marty Cosgro, Dr. Greg Thomas and Dr. Tom Maier, (both of the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Agency), Dr. Dan Hile, and Mary Bianco.  And thanks also to the wonderful teenagers who helped to produce the TV shows!"

" 'HealthWorks! TV' is dedicated to Jason."
